Hello everyone. I bought a k150 usb pic programmer and am struggling to program my pics. first of all i can't get the chipdata.cid folder to open on my computer. it does not recognize the cid file type. I am trying to program a pic16f84a using the microburn program. What do i need to do? thanks

What do you mean "can't get the chipdata.cid folder to open"? Chipdata.cid is a text file, not a folder. But there is no reason to 'open it' unless you are editing the PIC entries.

i guess i am very confused. i got this programmer and am completely new to programming pics. i have a hex file ready to load onto a pic16f84a and i ran it through filehex and it said it was good with no errors to change. do i need to load a hex file onto the programmer before i can use it? i think that is what i am looking for. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

EDIT: i believe i need the k150.hex file from the diypack22 but i can't get the setup.exe application to run on my computer because i have windows 7 i think. What should I do

Where did you buy the programmer?

The K150 programmer is sold 'ready to go'. The K150.hex file is the hex file that is programmed into the firmware chip on the programmer board. There is no need to change this - just use the DIYpack that is matched to the firmware on your board. This is either supplied with the board or specified in the documentation to download.

You have 2 problems.

1. Programming the firmware chip (16F628A)
The programmer will not work without this chip. You will need access to another PIC programmer so you can program it.

I suggest you download DIYpack25EP - you can get it at here. Unzip the files to a folder - suggest 'DIYpack25EP'.

One of the files inside this folder is 'epk150.hex' - this is the file that needs to be programmed into the 16F628A chip. When done insert the chip into the socket on the programmer (not the programming socket).

2. Using the programmer
You will need a DC power supply to power the programmer, at least 18VDC. Most unregulated 12VDC supplies will have an output close to this and they will keep that output under 'light' load currents (the programmer uses little current). The supply should have a 2.5mm DC plug, center positive.

You will need to install the USB drivers for the programmer. These can be downloaded from the FTDI website here. Download the version appropriate for your version of Windows.

Make sure you follow the install guide when installing the driver. Do not simply plug in the programmer and let Windows do it for you.

Once the USB drivers are installed, connect the programmer to the PC. Always power up the programmer first before connecting the USB cable. Run the 'Microbrn.exe' file located in the DIYpack25EP folder.

If the software cannot find the programmer you will need to set the COM port correctly. Go to Windows Device Manager and look at what COM port number Windows has allocated to the virtual USB port. The in Microbrn go to 'File - Port' and enter that number there. Microbrn should now be able to connect.

Once that happens you can program your 16F84A chip.

I can sell you a pre-programmed PIC but I am situated in Australia. You won't get it in a hurry by regular airmail post (cheapest shipping method).

If you want to proceed then email me direct.
