A customer wishes to program the PIC16F631. This is a 20 pin device but Microbrn shows it as a 14 pin device going in slot 13 of the ZIF socket.

Please can you clarify where it should be positioned.

Sorry but cannot help.

All development of the DIY PIC programmers has stopped and there is nobody available to make any changes or bug fixes.

Hi all, the 16F631 can be programmed, many done and no problem seen,
Insert  the 16F631 PIC positioned pin 1 at ZIF pos 13 , so the last 4 pins ( 9,10,11,12) extend  back over the ZIP rear end. away from the lock lever. 
since only the top 4 pins ( 1,2 , 19, 20 ) are used for programming,  with a little care the PIC can be inserted and programmed , tilted so the extra 4 pins can be there.
If you donĀ“t mind the trouble, use a 8-14 pin socket between the ZIF and the PIC, pin 1 at pos 13.

to save me the trouble of fitting an 8pin socket to each 16F631 before programming, 
using my pcb drill , I drilled 4 x  1.5mm  holes in the top of the ZIF socket to fit the DIP 4 lower pins - away from the  lever.  
Use any old IC to mark the positions, centered about the small screw.  
only drill through the top 4-5mm , so not too far into the moving part below.
